Crim Center SEL Academy
The social emotional needs of my students birth through high school students?
The SEL needs of my teachers, staff, parents/caregivers?
Make sure the SEL training is not ‘one size fits all’ and directly address the needs of my environment?
Crim Center SEL Academy Overview
Many schools in Georgia have reached out to us concerning the challenges of creating learning environment that ensures every child can safely acquire these crucial skills and focus on learning. For school populations where experiences of chronic stress, trauma, poverty, racial bias, disability, or other barriers to social inclusion are common, play and sports based youth development programming is limited or not used to combat these barriers.
In addition, many SEL programs do not focus on a culturally responsive approach to training and instead use a one size fit all approach to creating equitable and nurturing learning environments for all student populations. Our approach blends in both meaningful connections between what students learn in school and their culture, language, and life experience. Research shows these connections help students access more rigorous curriculum, develop high-level academic skills, and see the relevance between what they learn at school and their lives.
SEL based play and sports based exploratory learning in schools offers an ever-present opportunity to establish inclusive social norms and develop fundamental social and emotional skills such as self-control, self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision making, and relationship building.
